Why are blood donations needed?

Dogs and cats, similar to humans, can also benefit from donated blood given by an anonymous donor.
Patients requiring lifesaving blood transfusions include victims of trauma, poisonings, autoimmune disease or bleeding associated from other disease or surgery.

Who can donate blood?

  • Pets of good temperament
  • Aged between 1 and 7 years of age in excellent health
  • Weight over 20kg
  • Regularly vaccinated, heartwormed and gut wormed pets

Who cannot donate?

  • Pets over 8 years of age
  • Pets scheduled for surgery within a month
  • Pets that have donated within the last six weeks
  • Pets that do not pass the check up
  • Non desexed females
  • Recent history of illness or vaccination within one month
  • Patients on medication
  • Pets that have had a transfusion before
  • Patients with a history of heart disease or epilepsy

What will my pet receive for being a donor?

  • A free comprehensive check up including blood testing
  • Free worming and a tick, flea and mite treatment
